West End Big Band will open our Big Band Night Season this year!

We are all about the glorious music of the 1930&40, mixed with nowadays life. It’s an experience for young and old, for the listener and for the dancer, for the party animal and for the wallflower. We have the space for all of it in the allure of our 1956 stunning art-deco venue.

Amsterdam has its new place for Swing, Hot Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, Pre-war jazz, Manouche jazz, with a new concept jam session once a month on a Friday.
“The Jazz Lobby” is the entrance/foyer of the exceptional monumental/art deco Kompaszaal, that used to be the waiting hall of the Dutch Kings Steam Shipping Company, in the eastern side of Amsterdam.
“The Jazz Lobby” is a ‘gezellige’ jazz club, that combines an opening concert, a jam session & delicious cocktails. It’s a temple for the enthusiasts of the first streams of jazz: be it musicians sharing their craft, art seekers indulging in the music or dancers letting loose on the dance floor.
The goal is to let this community grow as much as possible, sharing ideas and concepts, communicating between various art forms and partying like crazy. The opening acts will take place from 9 to 10 pm and then continue with the session from 10 till we can.

Have you always wanted to try out Charleston? Do you want to keep working on the basics and get better at it? Here is your opportunity!
We bring you a two part Charleston Crash Course in December with Hajo and Teo!

Part 1: December 6th 19.00 – 21.00
You may have had some Charleston basics in class, but those are not yet steady and you still tend to avoid fast tunes on the dance floor. You really want to get the right technic and feel comfortable and chill when dancing Charleston. In this workshop we will make sure we tackle some of the core basics of Charleston, the Hand to Hand, Open doors, Tandem and Kick Ups. We will discuss why is Charleston super chill for fast tunes and how you can make it easy for yourself when dancing this dance.

Part 2: December 20th 19.00 – 21.00
You have your basics steady and moves like Hand to Hand, Open doors, Tandem and Kick Ups are EASY for you. You want the moves challenge and you want the speed challenge. WE got you, join us for a very fun repertoire 😀

Costs:
EUR 25 per Workshop, EUR 45 if you take both classes (props for experienced dancers that know that they can still learn a lot from the basics workshop)

The venue will be offering dinner and the bar will be open for drinks, so please make use of it and support the venue so we can keep dancing there!

TEACHERS
Irene is a visual artist and a dancer. She was originally trained in ballet, but jazz dance attracted her because of the space for personal expression and freedom of movement. She is also interested in its rich history, its connection to the contemporary world and its aesthetics. She also loves to explore the multilayered nature of jazz music, such as African, Latin, bebop elements… She gets inspired by reading and watching clips of the original dancers and besides solo jazz and lindy hop she loves to complicate her life with tap dance training, with an ever learning attitude. She has experience teaching at international festivals around Europe as well as competing, with many placements. After having experienced two quite vibrant scenes for a while (Ghent & Stockholm), Irene is currently based in Athens, where she is coaching and training with the lindy hop and solo jazz teams of her project Athens Authentic Jazz Dance.

Sander has had a passion for the swing era, its music and aesthetic since he was a teenager. He studied fashion technology and loves to create his own clothes in order to enhance his style of dancing. He’s part of the Brussels swing dance community and together with the Jazz Maniacs and The Old Soulz dance crew. He works on constantly learning about jazz culture, breaking down video footage from the great African American masters, drawing inspiration from them to keep their style and spirit alive. Early Bebop is the music he finds himself drawn towards the most since he feels like it gives him more ways to express himself.

Before discovering the power of Lindy hop, Will spent his pre-dance years in the world of professional rugby, and tries to bring the same energy and dynamism to his dancing. He finds strong parallels between his experience in rugby and Lindy Hop, such as teamwork, improvisation, and fluid movement. Fuelled by a love of swing music and inspired by legendary dancers from the Savoy ballroom, Will’s teaching focuses on helping students find their authentic expression.

Jessy Miller trained in classical Ballet and Tap before finding a passion in African American jazz dances at the age of 20. She fell in love with jazz music and the culture of the dance and values creative expression and authenticity. Inspired by the African American dancers of the Savoy Ballroom, you can expect Jessy’s teaching to focus on taking risks in the dance, exploring new movements, and solid rhythmical choices.

We are Santi and Euge, dancers and performers from Buenos Aires. We have been dancing together since 2017 as independent dancers, sharing our learning processes and supporting each other to consciously mutual grow. During these years we have been inspired by early Lindy Hop days archives, working on connection and creativity. We search for our own identity, focusing on Swing dance roots, delving into African-American culture. We currently compete and teach in different countries. For us, Lindy Hop means values of growth and community, a space for creativity and reflection.
